Equality for Australian women has worsened dramatically since the beginning of this decade, with high levels of sexual harassment in the workplace, the former President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Gillian Triggs, recently warned.

The Australian Government has announced it is scrapping the low income super contribution (LISC), a Government superannuation payment of up to $500 each financial year to help low-income earners save for their retirement. The LISC is available to people earning 37,000 or less a year. YWCA Australia is disappointed with this move, which will have a disproportionate impact on women who generally have lower wages, lower workforce participation and generate less superannuation over their lifetime than men.

A new UN resolution to reiterate the importance of women's involvement in conflict prevention, resolution and peace-building has been passed by the UN Security Council.  Resolution 2122, unanimously adopted last Friday 18 October, puts in place a roadmap for "a more systematic approach to the implementation of commitments on women, peace and security". It highlights the critical importance of ­gender equality and women's empowerment to international peace and security.
