Some YWCAs operate medium and long-term housing services for the community.
Here are some Australian YWCA medium and long-term housing programs and services:
My Own Place, YWCA of Toowoomba
The YWCA in Toowoomba provides transition accommodation for women to assist and empower them towards independence. The program is based on a very successful program of the YWCA in Fort Worth, Texas.
Program participants live in a safe, secure environment with their own room and shared facilties.
A program coordinator helps participants to work out immediate and long-term needs, working together to move towards independent living.
Participants also receive basic life skills training and support to access other community programs and services.
Young Women's Intermediate Supported Accommodation, YWCA NSW
This successful YWCA service provides safe and supported medium-term accommodation to homeless 17 - 25 year old young women who are pregnant, have children or are working on the restoration of their children. The service accommodates 90 women and children each year.
Many of these young mothers have experienced abuse including domestic violence, sexual assault, incest, and homelessness. As a result, they often have poor living and parenting skills. As well as a safe place to live, the program offers intensive assistance to the women to build their parenting and living skills and help them achieve independent living.
Outreach support for the young women continues after they have left the service. The service works hard to break the cross-generational cycles of multiple disadvantage, abuse, poverty and hopelessness.
Community housing, YWCA Victoria
YWCA Victoria, in conjunction with the Victorian State Government Office of Housing, manages 135 units of housing in metropolitan Melbourne. These include a 24 room mixed rooming house and self contained flats and units.
YWCA Victoria also owns and operates the 65 room Richmond House which provides long term accomodation for women in inner Melbourne.
Community housing, YWCA Downs and Sth West Queensland
YWCA Downs and Sth West Queensland provides long-term community housing in Toowoomba for low and moderate income households.
