Friendship and support changes lives.

All young people need to feel valued and supported. Sadly, not all young people feel that way.

YWCA one-on-one mentoring programs help isolated children build confidence, self-esteem and resilience, improving their lives both inside and outside the classroom.

The benefits of one-on-one support programs include confidence, higher self esteem and more positive relationships with their family and peers.

Here are some Australian YWCA one-on-one mentoring programs:

Positive role models for young women

Asista is a mentoring program for young women. Asista provides positive role models, through mentoring and support, to disadvantaged young women in the north-western suburbs of Melbourne.

The program is for young women who are particularly vulnerable and “at risk” due to a range of complex issues. They are referred to the program by child protection workers or after involvement with the juvenile justice system.

Young women in the program are matched with a volunteer woman mentor. The young woman and mentor develop a positive relationship by spending 2-6 hours a fortnight together doing social and recreational activities.

A mentoring program bringing profound positive change

This unique mentoring program provides one to one support and encourages the development of social and life skills to vulnerable children at critical times.

Trained and screened adult mentors, generally between the ages of 20 and 45 years, are matched with an individual child and spend time together on a weekly basis.

By spending time with a responsible adult doing everyday activities (like bike riding, kicking the footy and going to the beach), the child is able to explore different skills and experiences that increase their sense of self worth, improve their relationships, develop their potential at home, school and in the community and have a lot of fun.
