Peer and group mentoring programs are other ways that YWCA support and connect young people.
Here are some Australian YWCA peer and group mentoring programs:
Connect-4, YWCA of Adelaide
To compliment its Big Brothers Big Sisters program, the YWCA of Adelaide set up the Connect-4 group mentoring project for children on its Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list.
The project is for disadvantaged children and young people (aged 7-17) who live in the north western region of metropolitan Adelaide.
Connect-4 provides these young people with the opportunity to participate in group activities (with an outdoors and adventure focus) in the company and support of a positive adult volunteer / role model. There are three young people and one adult in each group.
Connect-4 activities focus on learning new skills through teamwork with peers and seeing positive adult role models. Connect-4 Activities may include indoor rock climbing, go-karting, strawberry picking, outdoor games, beach volleyball, day trips to Victor Harbour or ten-pin bowling.
YWCA Leadership Program, YWCA Brisbane
This group mentoring program is for young girls who show potential as leaders but are unlikely to achieve this because of their circumstances, such as social-economic status or unsupportive adults in their lives.
Over five weekly meetings, the program helps young women turn feelings of hopelessness and despair into feelings of control and self-confidence, and to increase knowledge of opportunities open to them.
The program involves coaching and mentoring to motivate, guide and support students to believe in themselves, develop leadership and related skills, and discover their potential.
At the end of the program, participants direct a community service event to showcase and practice new-found skills.
