The Asia/Pacific region is the poorest, most populous and youngest region in the world.
Here are some examples of YWCA programs in the Pacific region:
Pacific Young Women's Leadership Strategy 2011-2014
The Pacific Young Wome's Leadership Strategy was developed through consultation with hundreds of young women from across the Pacific.
Young women from the Solomon Island, Papua New Guinea, Fji, Samoa, Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand were asked what would help them to rise up as leaders in their communities. They responded that they needed to be safe, respected, included, connected and skilled.
The report, the first of its kind. was launched at the YWCA World Council in July 2011.
Prison Rehabilitation Program, YWCA of Western Samoa
An innovative pilot program with women prisoners in Samoa develops important life skills and self-esteem
This was a four-month pilot rehabilitation project for women prisoners at Tafa’igata Correctional Centre in Apia, Samoa. Most of the women involved in the project had been imprisoned for theft-related crimes and had little prospects for employment when they are released.
The program, which included visits and training, addressed the stigma attached to women prisoners, reduced the risk of re-offending and assisted reintegration back into the community after release.
The program's training component included workshops on physical and mental health, and income-earning skills so the women can support themselves after prison. Volunteers from NGOs, universities, private consultants and government departments willingly donate their time and expertise to deliver the workshops.
Tokstret Radio, YWCA of Papua New Guinea
A groundbreaking radio show spreading the word on HIV/AIDs and sexual and reproductive health and a range of women’s issues
The women of Papua New Guinea (PNG) are facing big challenges. Violence against women has reached a crisis level and PNG has the highest incidence of HIV in the Pacific region.
The YWCA of PNG is a leader in HIV and AIDS education and reaches over 60 villages, reducing stigma and discrimination. The outreach work in villages and squatter camps builds on the pioneering work and national credibility of the YWCA of Papua New Guinea's literacy programs.
One of the initiatives of the YWCA of PNG is the famous Tokstrat radio program funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) that is broadcast throughout the country. The program aims to empower women by providing a forum for discussing reproductive and sexual health issues and a clinical session providing medical advice, which is particularly important to people in rural areas.
The Tokstret program has contributed to breaking down barriers and inhibitions around sexual health and the program now also covers adolescent reproductive and sexual health.
