Celebrate Across Australia, Across the World

Embargoed until 12 noon Thursday 7th March 2002

‘March 8th marks International Women’s Day. A day that has been observed since 1908 as a time for women to come together in support of the many causes feminism has championed’, said Ms Fiona Jolly, President YWCA of Australia.

‘In Australia the women’s movement not only fills International Women’s Day with events, but the days around it as well with a range of activities demonstrating the depth and diversity of the women’s movement.

The YWCA of Australia with its sister organisations in over 100 countries celebrates IWD this year by holding forums and breakfasts and supporting broad community events like rallies and lectures.

The YWCA is also one of many groups supporting the push for 300 000 women to hear about celebrations for the centenary of white women’s right to vote and the 40th anniversary of Indigenous women’s vote on IWD.

The celebrations planned by YWCA’s across Australia reflect our concerns in key areas such as violence against women, women’s economic security and women’s human rights. Because while much has been achieved, much remains to be done.’

Just some of the events that YWCA’s across Australia are involved in for IWD are listed on the next page. Please contact the organisers of specific events for more information.
