Spring 2011

Four YWCA delegates attended the Commonwealth People’s Forum (CPF), held 25-27 October in Perth, and a further four YWCA young women were invited to be among 130 young people from around the Commonwealth to attend the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF), 23-27 October in Fremantle, in the lead up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

Australia’s Global Ambassador for Women and Girls, Penny Williams, joined YWCA delegates during pre-CHOGM activities to launch the YWCA Pacific Young Women’s Leadership Strategy in Perth on 26 October.

YWCA Australia has joined forces with more than 60 national housing, welfare and community sector organisations to highlight the issue of housing affordability in Australia. The Australians for Affordable Housing campaign calls on both federal and state governments to take action to overcome this longstanding issue.

Ys in Australia

YWCAs in Australia commemorated the YWCA Australia Week without Violence, October 17 - 23, 2011. YWCA Victoria and Adelaide have held events with a local flavour, and YWCA of Canberra will hold an exhibition in late November.

The YWCA of Perth has received three-year funding from the WA Department of Health to deliver the Encore program across Western Australia. This much needed support will enable Encore to continue to be delivered at three sites across Perth as well as in Albany, Geraldton and Bunbury.

YWCAs across Australia have been holding their Annual General Meetings (AGM), bringing together their members, Board and staff to celebrate the year’s achievements and undertake annual business.

World YWCA

Every year in October, the World YWCA and YWCAs worldwide mark the YWCA Week Without Violence, which aims to prevent violence in all its forms. This year, between 17-23 October, the annual global campaign inspired local activities at YWCAs around the world.

A survey of YWCAs around the world, completed for the 2011 World Council, reveals that the movement is still growing after 150 years of existence. World Council saw the affiliation of the 107th and 108th YWCAs in US Virgin Islands and Haiti.

Spotlight on YWCAs

YWCA of Taiwan is delivering a Young Women’s Leadership Program each term, which has resulted in seven groups of young women completing the program. Lectures from professionals provide a range of global views, and the young women are encouraged to remain engaged with the YWCA.

YWCA Solomon Islands has hosted a number of volunteers through the Australia Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYADs) and Australian Volunteer for International Development (AVID) programs, in both Honiara and in their Munda branch. Joanne Brislane from Melbourne has just finished two years living and working in the remote community of Munda, Western Province and has shared her insights.
