YWCA Australia has joined forces with more than 60 national housing, welfare and community sector organisations to highlight the issue of housing affordability in Australia. The Australians for Affordable Housing campaign calls on both federal and state governments to take action to overcome this longstanding issue.

Housing stress is widespread in Australia. One in ten households are paying more than 30 percent of their income in housing costs, making basics such as food, transport and healthcare harder to afford, yet more affordable housing options are simply not available.

Changes that are being called for include additional low cost rental housing and financial assistance for low income renters; more support for low income families and first time homeowners to purchase their own homes; a review of taxes around housing; and a dedicated housing minister to deliver on these demands.
