The YWCA of Perth has received three-year funding from the WA Department of Health to deliver the Encore program across Western Australia. This much needed support will enable Encore to continue to be delivered at three sites across Perth as well as in Albany, Geraldton and Bunbury. YWCA of Perth is also hoping to establish a program for Aboriginal women in Kalgoorlie and expand into another area of Perth. Encore in Western Australia reaches up to 140 women who have experienced breast cancer each year.
This grant will ensure the program can continue and grow. For some years YWCA of Perth has delivered Encore to their vast district with minimal funding through volunteer management. Board member Beth Keely has been coordinating Encore in a volunteer capacity, three days per week, for over 10 years and is pleased to have the opportunity to step back from the role now that a staff member has been recruited. We recognise her significant contribution to keeping the program alive during a difficult period.
Encore is an 8-week program for women who have experienced breast cancer, provided free of charge across Australia. Encore is proven to help women deal with the after-effects of breast cancer surgery and treatment through gentle exercise and peer support.
