A $2.6 million community housing development in Wodonga that will provide safe and secure homes for women has been officially opened yesterday by YWCA Australia.
In partnership with Homes Victoria under the Victorian Government’s $6.3 billion Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund, YWCA – Australia’s only national specialist women’s housing provider developed the homes with local builder Cavalier Homes.
YWCA Australia Chief Executive Officer Michelle Phillips shared these households are the first to be completed as part of a broader commitment from YWCA Australia to increase housing supply in the Albury-Wodonga area.
“We are proud to deliver the six brand new homes in Wodonga. Soon we will be completing another nine in neighbouring Baranduda and have just started construction on another ten in nearby Lavington”, says Ms Phillips.
As gender responsive housing specialists, YWCA Australia’s Women’s Housing Framework and design guidelines are incorporated into all developments, keeping the unique housing needs of women at the centre.
“Our women’s housing framework was designed for women by women. What women and their families need isn’t complicated. Well located and affordable homes in their local communities is just one example.”
“Simple things like the number of bedrooms and living spaces need to be considered beyond value for money. We know that for women led families, two-bedroom homes like this with flexible living options for study and play fosters positive relationships and creates an environment for families to thrive.”
“We look forward to our continuing partnership with the Victorian Government to increase safe, secure and long-term housing options for women in regional areas and greater Victoria.”
