In December last year, YWCA Australia joined over 150 leading community organisations from around Australia in writing to the Attorney-General, Senator George Brandis, urging him not to repeal the racial vilification protections in the Racial Discrimination Act. The letter highlighted the critical role that the Racial Discrimination Act (the Act) has long played in combating racial hatred and protecting individuals and groups against discrimination and hate speech. The Australian Government has now released an exposure draft of proposed amendments that will change the racial vilification protections in the Act.
