Nominate Now: YWCA Board and Young Women’s Council

Are you passionate about gender equality? Are you looking to contribute to the YWCA movement and vision of a world where all women, young women and girls are safe and respected with equal access to power, opportunity and resources?

We are now seeking nominations for appropriately qualified people to join the YWCA Board, and young women who passionately advocate for gender equality to join our Young Women’s Council.

Board Directors

YWCA Australia is currently inviting suitable candidates to stand for election as directors of the Company through the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM) process.

Three director positions are available, at least one of whom must be a Young Woman (that is a woman who is 30 years old or younger at the time of her appointment).

What we’re looking for

Through a board evaluation process the board has identified the following skill sets to seek as a matter of priority:

  • Commercial property and asset management, ideally also strategy and commercial experience
  • Governance, risk and compliance
  • Finance and audit (strategic finance)
  • Relevant board experience
  • Skills, experience and networks relevant to government relations at a strategic level
  • Senior executive management experience

YWCA strongly encourages and welcomes nominations from young women and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Are you eligible?

Applicants must be eligible to be appointed as a Director within the requirements of the Constitution, the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the ACNC Act.  Key requirements are that the Director must be:

  • Female, or identify as female, and at least 18 years old;
  • A member* of the Board of World YWCA, an Ordinary Member or a Life Member of YWCA Australia;
  • Is not an employee of the Company;
  • Consents in writing to be a director; and
  • Is not prohibited from being a director by reason of the Corporations Act.

Your initial term will be for three years and your performance will be reviewed annually.

This position will require the applicant to satisfactorily complete a national criminal history record check prior to appointment.

Our Board

The YWCA Australia Board is made up of nine Directors, one of whom is President of YWCA.  We are constitutionally required to have one-third of our Directors as Young Women (30 or under at the time of appointment).  There are three Board established Committees:

  • Finance, Audit and Risk Committee
  • Property Assets Committee
  • People, Culture and Governance Committee

As a Director you may also be asked to join one of those Committees to offer your expertise or as a learning experience.

  • Submit your application using the online application form linked below.  You should note that your photo and the paragraph may be used in the election material to be sent to Members.
  • Nominations close 22 September.
  • Please note: the YWCA Nominations Committee will review your application to ensure it aligns with the selection principles agreed by the Members and selection criteria agreed by the Board.  The Nominations Committee will recommend to the Board which candidates should be proposed for election; the Board will approve candidates in late October.  It is anticipated that at least two candidates per skill set will be nominated for election.
  • Eligible candidates will be notified in advance of the voting period which will open on 4 November.  Results will be announced at the YWCA AGM on 28 November.  Elected candidates will not be expected to attend or speak at the AGM.

Young Women’s Council

Are you a passionate feminist aged 12-30? Join YWCA Australia’s Young Women’s Council and contribute to national feminist policy and advocacy, as well as member engagement and strategy for a national gender equality organisation.

Membership of the Young Women’s Council offers opportunities to gain new skills and networks and be a part a global movement of passionate young women and girls. As part of the Council you’ll collaborate for a period of two-years with 17 other young women and girls aged between 12 and 30 from all around Australia.

Are you eligible?

  • Be a member of YWCA Australia*
  • Identify as female or non-binary and be aged between 12 and 30 at time of application
  • Share the vision and values of YWCA Australia
  • Be passionate and committed to the elevating the rights and voice of young women and girls in Australia
  • Adhere to all requirements in the YWCA Australia volunteer agreement, and complete a working with children check (if required)
  • Attend and participate in all meetings and activities, or seek approval for absence in advance

It is a requirement of all Young Women’s Council members to attend the Young Women’s Forum which will be held in Sydney on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th February 2020. Please consider this requirement prior to applying. All travel costs will be covered by YWCA.
