Feminist Book Club: Fix the System, Not the Women

Book choice by June MISSives guest editor, Rachel Williamson

My book recommendation this month is Fix the System, Not the Women by Laura Bates. Laura is a feminist activist and author, and the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project which collects testimonies of gender inequality from women across the globe.

As women, we often grow up experience overt and implicit sexism and too often the burden is put on us to keep ourselves safe. In this work, Bates explores the interlocking systems which oppress women and challenges the myth that women are complicit in our own oppression. She looks at five key areas – education, policing, criminal justice, media, and politics to explain how these broader systems are rigged against women.

This book is a thoroughly researched and extremely well written exploration of how the systems in our lives are designed for men, and why we must ensure that policy decisions are specifically designed with women in mind.
