Medical Accommodation Program

Providing comfortable accommodation and meals for people visiting Darwin for medical treatment from regional and remote communities

YWCA Australia’s Medical Accommodation Program provides comfortable accommodation to people travelling to Darwin for various medical appointments or medical treatment. We operate two styles of accommodation through the program – Barbara James House and Doctor Helen Phillips Cottages.

Barbara James House

Barbara James House provides comfortable accommodation, and three meals per day to people travelling to Darwin for various medical appointments or medical treatment, including radiation, oncology, and other cancer-related treatment services at the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre.

We provide:

  • Some rooms with ensuite and some rooms with shared bathroom. Linen and towels are provided
  • Three meals per day, while checked in. Breakfast and dinner are available in the dining room and lunch is delivered to the room directly
  • Access to shared facilities, including computer room, library, movie room and laundry room
  • Top End Patient Transport (TEPT) buses provide transfers to appointments at Royal Darwin Hospital and the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre and the Palmerston Regional Hospital

Doctor Helen Phillips Cottages

Doctor Helen Phillips Cottages provide a “home away from home” style accommodation in a sole use room, with shared facilities, at one of six 3-bedroom houses near the Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital.

We provide:

  • A private room in one of our cottages, which includes a fridge. Linen and towels are provided
  • Three meals per day, while checked in, and a shared kitchen for guest use
  • Access to shared facilities, including living area, bathroom, laundry, and kitchen.
  • Top End Patient Transport (TEPT) buses provide transfers to appointments at Royal Darwin Hospital and the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre and the Palmerston Regional Hospital

How to book a stay through the Medical Accommodation Program

All bookings at Barbara James House and Doctor Helen Phillips Cottages are organised exclusively through the Northern Territory Government’s Patient-Assisted Travel Service (PATS).
